Information about Traffic Stop and Pedestrian Stop Data

Starting in 2004 the State of Illinois began requiring all law enforcement agencies to record data for every traffic stop to include the race of the driver, the reason for the traffic stop, and other numerous additional data fields for use in this traffic stop study. The Illinois Department of Transportation is responsible for collecting, compiling, and releasing the data collected across all agencies, statewide, to the public. The Illinois Department of Transportation typically releases each year's traffic stop data by July 1st of the summer following each reporting year.

In 2016, the State of Illinois, also through the Illinois Department of Transportation, began requiring similar data collection requirements on pedestrian stops by law enforcement officers. Data elements collected on pedestrian stops are similar to those collected in the traffic stop data. The release of this data follows a similar timeframe to that of the above traffic stop data. Analysis of both traffic the stop and pedestrian stop data is conducted at the State-level through firms contracted by the Illinois Department of Transportation. Interpretation of the data and subsequent findings are also the responsibility of the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The Bloomington Police Department does not interpret or report out on either of these two data sets. Traffic stop data and pedestrian stop data can be accessed by the public by visiting IDOT's website.
