Minimum Requirements - Experienced Officer 

• Citizen of United States
• High school diploma or its equivalent.
• Ability to possess a firearm
• 2 out of the last 3 years employed as a full-time police officer with a municipal, county or
state agency.
• Currently in good standing or separated from previous department in good standing
• Successful completion of the State of Illinois Basic Training Academy or a recognized
equivalent* 
• There is no age limit per 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6

†The age limit does not apply to 65ILCS5/10-2.1-6...(iv) to any person who has served as
a deputy under Section 3- 6008 of the Counties Code and otherwise meets necessary
training requirements or (v) to any person who has served as a sworn officer as a member
of the Department of State Police. Or to anyone who has worked as a full time sworn police
officer in a municipality in the United States.

Physical Requirements
Must pass the physical agility test administered by the Bloomington Police Department. The
candidate must pass each task on the first attempt.

Character
Must be of good moral character as determined by a background investigation. Must agree to be fingerprinted and found not to have been convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors.

Step One:

(A) - Online Application - The application must be completed prior to moving on in the process. 

(B) Written Test: 

In state lateral / experienced officers:

The written test is NOT required for in-state laterals offices who have a minimum of two years of full time law enforcement experience. Once you apply, you will be contacted and moved on to the next step. 

Out of state laterals must complete the NTN Exam.

After you apply, please sign up for an exam through National Testing Network (NTN). National Testing Network directly contracts with public safety departments across the country to test candidates for jobs. Once a candidate completes this simple process, information and test scores will be sent directly to each department. You can get more information about their site here.

You will be tested on 3 portions (Video, Reading & Writing) and must pass each portion. An average score of all 3 portions will be determined. The Police Department has set a cutoff score of 80%. Scores will be available to view in your NTN account within 2-3 days.

Video - 65 or above

Reading - 70 or above

Writing - 70 or above

Step Two – Physical Test

Physical agility testing typically lasts about an hour. This is a Pass/Fail exam, with all components taking place indoors. We recommend you wear the appropriate athletic shoes and clothing for this exam.

Step Three - Interview

Upon successfully passing the agility test, you will be invited to schedule an in-person interview. 

Immediately following the interview you will meet with background investigators to begin the background investigation process if necessary. The estimated completion time to complete the interview and meet with background investigators is 2-3 hours. The interviews will take place at the Bloomington Police Department, 305 S. East St., Bloomington, IL 61701.

Candidates not invited to participate in Step Four will remain eligible for future consideration based on the employment needs of the Bloomington Police Department. You will be notified, if you have been removed from the pool. 

Step Four - Background

 Please review the BFPC Rules and Regulations link above to find a list of all disqualifications. The background process can take 3-4 weeks to complete.
