Discrimination Complaints
The City of Bloomington, by ordinance, prohibits discrimination by reason of race, color, sex, religion, age, national origin, marital status, familial status, or physical or mental disability unrelated to ability in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, and financing. It is also illegal to retaliate against persons who oppose discriminatory practices or who have filed complaints regarding discrimination.
The Legal Department advises the Bloomington Human Relations Commission and the Community Relations Office of the City of Bloomington. The Illinois Human Rights Act authorizes the Illinois Human Rights Commission to review complaints of discrimination. The Illinois Human Rights Commission is a separate agency from the City's Human Relations Commission and requires a complainant to file an independent complaint if he or she wants the state Commission to review the complaint.
