Minimum Requirements - Entry Level

Age
Candidates who are twenty (20) years of age shall be eligible to take the initial examination for a firefighter. However, no appointment will be made to the Fire Department until the candidate attains the age of twenty-one (21). All candidates shall be under thirty-five years of age except as otherwise provided by statute:

1) Any person previously employed as a full-time firefighter in a regularly constituted fire department of any municipality or fire protection district located in Illinois.

2) Any person who has served a municipality as a regularly enrolled volunteer, paid-on-call or part-time firefighter, or

3) Any person who turned 35 while serving as a member of the active or reserve components of any of the branches of the Armed Forces or the United States or the National Guard of any state, whose service was characterized as honorable under honorable, if separated from the military and is currently under the age of 49.

Education
High school diploma or its equivalent.

Preferred Certifications (Not Required)

Paramedic License
Pre-Hospital Registered Nurses
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
Pre-Hospital Physicians Assistants who have met the requirements set forth by the Emergency Medical Services System Act (210 IL CS 50)

Requirements

Character
Must be of good moral character as determined by a background investigation. Must agree to be fingerprinted and found not to have been convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors.

Entry Level Process - Overview

Step One - Apply / NTN Test

Step One – Online Application and Exam

Apply on our website by clicking the link above. A copy of your Paramedic License or Proof of enrollment are required to be uploaded with application. DD-214 is required for Military points. College transcripts are required for Education points.

Sign up for an exam through National Testing Network (NTN). National Testing Network directly contracts with public safety departments across the country to test candidates for jobs. Once a candidate completes this simple process, information and test scores will be sent directly to each department. You can get more information about their site here. *NTN is now offering virtual testing. Due to COVID-19, testing availability may be limited.

You will be tested on 4 areas (Human Relations, Mechanical, Math and Reading) and must pass each area. Scores will be available to view in your NTN account within 2-3 days.

Human Relations - 70 or above

Mechanical - 70 or above

Math - 70 or above

Reading - 70 or above

The online exam is 70% of your final score. Applicants will be ranked by the order of their test score. In addition, applicants may receive 5 Veterans preference points in accordance with statutory requirements. Applicants will also be eligible for 5 points for a Fire Science or Emergency Medical Services Associates degree or a Bachelor’s degree in any subject, Paramedic license, PHRN, EHPR, ARPN.

Step Two - Interview

Upon successfully passing the online exam, you will be invited to schedule an in-person interview.

Complete and pass CPAT with ladder climb.

Immediately following the interview you will meet with background investigators for an integrity interview. The estimated completion time to complete the interview and meet with background investigators is two (2) hours.

You must receive an average of 70% from the panel to move forward. The interview is 30% of your final score.

Step Three -Comprehensive Background Check & Polygraph Exam

Step Four -Conditional Job Offer

All scores will be ranked in order and a Final Eligibility List will be created. Eligibility List must be approved by Commission. To be eligible for employment, you must complete the following:

Successfully complete the Physical and Drug Screen with favorable results

Successfully complete the Psychological Exam with favorable results

Medical Examination

A physician will complete the medical examination. This is a comprehensive physical which includes a psychological exam and drug screen.
