Bloomington’s Historic Districts and Properties

Bloomington is home to six historic districts, many locally designated historic properties and several properties on the National Register of Historic Places and National Landmarks.

Historic Districts

• White Place Historic District
  This mostly residential district was approved into the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The subdivision was laid out by Samuel White, a furniture manufacturer, building contractor, and insurance adjuster, in 1898.

• Franklin Square Historic District
  This district consists of Franklin Park and the private residences bordering the park. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The district was designated a local S-4 Historic District by Bloomington City Council in 1979.

901 N. McLean Street (Dodson & Adelai Stevenson I House)

• North Roosevelt Avenue Historic District
  North Roosevelt Avenue Historic District was built up in the 1870’s by Irish and Hungarian immigrants. The district has several properties under the local S-4 Historic designation.

• Downtown Bloomington Historic District 
  This historic district is comprised of roughly a 12-block area in Downtown Bloomington. This entire district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The McLean County Museum of History provides an informative architectural tour into Historic Downtown Bloomington.

• East Grove Street Historic District
  This district includes mostly private residences along 400-700 East Grove Street, bound on the west by Gridley Street and on the east by Clinton Street. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

• Davis-Jefferson Historic District
  The Davis-Jefferson Historic District was designated a local S-4 Historic and Cultural District by the Bloomington City Council in 1984. The district includes portions of 900-1100 East Jefferson Street and 202 and 204 Davis Street.

Historic Surveys

Dimmitt's Grove 
A phase I historic survey was completed on the Dimmitt's Grove Neighborhood in Bloomington in 1990. The primary objective of the survey was to identify and record all historical resources within the neighborhood. The links to the survey below detail each property in the neighborhood including architectural style, building materials, and potential for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The majority of properties in the neighborhood were built before 1920.

Commercial and Industrial Historic Resources Survey
This survey project was initiated by the City of Bloomington in 2017 with the goal of evaluating
its historic industrial building stock for preservation planning purposes.
